While the coastal side of Nikiti is famous for its lively marina and sandy beaches, there is another world waiting just a few minutes uphill. Paleos Nikitas — the Old Town — is one of the oldest villages in Halkidiki, where history is preserved in every stone wall and narrow alleyway.
Walking through the Old Town is the perfect contrast to a day at the beach. It is quiet, shaded by vines, and filled with the scent of jasmine. Here is our local guide on how to spend an afternoon in the most charming part of Sithonia.
1. Explore the historic architecture
The Old Town is known for its Macedonian architecture — houses built from local stone with wooden balconies and characteristic red-tiled roofs. Many of these buildings date back to the 19th century and have been carefully restored. Take your time to wander with no particular destination in mind. Every corner offers something worth photographing.
2. Visit the Church of Agios Nikitas
Built in 1867, the church of Agios Nikitas sits at the highest point of the village. It is a place of quiet and great historical value. The courtyard offers a place to rest, and if you follow the path behind the church, you will be rewarded with a view of the sea stretching towards the Kassandra peninsula.
The Old Town isn't just a place to visit.
It's the heart of Nikiti's heritage.
3. Golden hour at the Old School
The stone-built Old School is one of the most beautiful buildings in the village. As the sun begins to set, the light catches the stone walls and creates a warmth that is hard to find anywhere else in Sithonia. It is worth timing your walk to arrive here in the late afternoon.
4. Stop for coffee at The Pattern
Just a few steps from these landmarks, The Pattern Bistro sits in the heart of the Old Town. We believe the best way to end a walk through history is with a specialty coffee or a handmade gelato on the terrace, watching village life move at its own unhurried pace.
We are open every day from 8:00 to 23:00, all year round — for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and everything in between.
Order from your hotel or villa
Not staying close to the Old Town? The Pattern delivers across Nikiti and the surrounding area — specialty coffee, cold drinks, brunch, and food straight to your hotel, villa or apartment. You can also order ahead for takeaway and pick it up without waiting.
