Most people know Nikiti as a summer destination: beaches, sunbeds, busy evenings by the sea. But ask anyone who lives here and they'll tell you a secret — the best months to explore Sithonia are the quiet ones. In autumn, winter and spring the crowds are gone, the light is softer, the air smells of pine and wild herbs, and the trails, hills and empty beaches belong to you.
Whether you're visiting Halkidiki off season or you live in the area all year round, here is our local guide to what to do in and around Nikiti between October and May — and how to fuel up before and after.
Hiking in Sithonia: olive groves, pine forests and sea views
The hills behind Nikiti are crossed by dirt roads and footpaths that wind through olive groves and pine forest, with the sea opening up in front of you at almost every turn. Start straight from the old town of Nikiti and climb gently towards the hills — within minutes, the village is behind you and all you hear is birds and goats' bells.
For a bigger day out, head into the centre of the peninsula to Mount Itamos, the highest point of Sithonia. Its pine-covered slopes offer some of the best hiking in Halkidiki, with wide views across the gulfs and, on clear days, all the way to Mount Athos — often snow-capped in winter. Nearby, the traditional stone village of Parthenonas is a beautiful place to start or finish a walk.
Prefer it flat and easy? Walk the coastline. Out of season, beaches like Kalogria and Lagomandra, just a short distance from Nikiti, are wonderfully empty — perfect for a long walk along the water.

Cycling and mountain biking around Nikiti
Sithonia is a dream for cyclists once the summer traffic disappears. Road cyclists can ride the coastal road around the peninsula — a classic long-distance loop with constant ups and downs, hidden coves and sea views from start to finish. Shorter rides along the coast from Nikiti are just as rewarding on a mild winter morning.
For mountain biking in Halkidiki, the forest tracks of the interior and the farm roads through the olive groves offer endless options, from easy family rides to steep, technical climbs. Mild temperatures from October to May make it the ideal season to ride — no midday heat, just fresh air and quiet roads.
What each season brings
Autumn in Nikiti is golden. The sea is still warm enough for a swim well into October, the light is soft, and from late autumn the olive harvest begins — families out in the groves, nets under the trees, and the famous olives of Halkidiki heading to the presses.
Winter in Halkidiki means crisp, clear days, long walks, the smell of wood fires in the old town and real village life. It's the season of slow mornings and long lunches — and of having entire beaches and trails to yourself.
Spring in Sithonia is the hiker's favourite. The hills turn green, wildflowers cover the paths, temperatures are perfect for long routes, and Greek Easter brings the villages to life with traditions, food and celebration.
Where to stay in Nikiti in winter: Etheres – Living in Nature
One of the challenges of visiting Sithonia off season is finding somewhere open. Etheres – Living in Nature is one of the few places in Nikiti and Sithonia that welcomes guests all year round. Its stone villas with private pools sit on the hillside above Nikiti, surrounded by Mediterranean nature, with views that stretch from Mount Olympus to Mount Athos.
From time to time, Etheres also organises weekends with guided hikes and bike rides through the hills around the village — an easy way to discover the trails of Sithonia with people who know them well. Check their website for upcoming dates.
Before the trail: Morning Bites and coffee to go
Every good route starts with a good breakfast. Stop at The Pattern in the old town before you set off and grab a Morning Bite — a slice of cheese pie, a spinach pie, a peinirli or a quiche — with a specialty coffee to go. Greek pies are the original trail food: easy to carry, filling, and just as good cold at the top of a hill.
Morning Bites are ready from 8:00, when we open, until they run out — so early starters get the full choice.
Lunch on the go: pick up a Lunch Box
Planning a longer day? Pick up a Lunch Box (13:00–17:30) to take with you, or have one waiting at home when you get back. A chicken tortilla with grilled vegetables travels well in a backpack; gemista or Smyrna-style meatballs are exactly what you want after a cold morning on the bike. Too tired to move? Order it straight to your door through delivery.thepattern.gr.
After the route: dinner, cocktails or a glass of wine
There's no better way to end a day outdoors than sitting down somewhere warm. Come back to The Pattern for a proper lunch or dinner in Nikiti, share stories from the trail, and finish the day with one of our signature cocktails or a glass of wine.
We're open every day, all year round — so whatever the season, there's a table, a coffee and a drink waiting for you in the old town of Nikiti.
A few tips for off-season outdoor days
Days are shorter in winter, so start early and plan to be back before dark. Carry water and a layer — mornings in the hills can be cool even when the coast is mild. Many beach bars and seasonal businesses close between November and April, so don't count on finding food along the way: pack your Morning Bites or Lunch Box before you go.
